How “Dear” is Our Family to Us?

Jesmyn Ward’s “Sing, Unburied, Sing” brings to light many unjust issues that Black people struggle with daily. For example, family, drugs, violence, injustice, incarceration, and racism. There are many other themes throughout the book, but these are just a few of them. I like how Ward shows how the children are affected by being born to a Black mother and a white father especially Jojo. The way the novel starts and ends with Jojo is something to pay attention too throughout the chapters. I enjoyed this read and experienced many emotions from anger to understanding. Being a parent myself I struggled with my own issues with my children, I cannot say that I understand what my parents had to go through with raising my siblings and I, but I can sympathize with them. Chapter 2 Leonie is a lot to get through!
